Is it wrong to hack a Mac?

I'm helping a friend upgrade her RAM and reformat her HP laptop. And tinkering with it has given me the itch to tinker with my Macbook.

If I'm daring enough, I would like to:

1. Install a region-free drive
2. Upgrade RAM to 2GB

But is this fool-hardiness or foolishness?

I would call it neither. Those aren't really 'hacks' per se, more like upgrades; it's not like you're making a custom BIOS or something. That would be a hack. :)

The RAM is easy. It's right under the keyboard, meant to be replaced easily. You can handle this.

The optical drive is another story. It's buried in the guts, not meant to be replaced by normal humans.

I recently replaced the hard drive in my iBook. I took pictures at each stage so I could put it back together. They're on my Flickr account if you want to get an idea of what you're in for if you go that way.

ram is necessary if u feel the lag. region free drive not so sure about Mac, becos if using WIndows, there are software to bypass the region thingy.

stephen, I want to install non-propriety ram though...

brian, wow. you are brave to open up your iBook and replace the hard drive. Congrats! :)

alvin, I was having problems figuring out who you were. Never associated MOFW with alvin, if you know what I mean. But I figured it out eventually. Thanks for the new link!
