the city

The city as we imagine it, the soft city of illusion, myth, aspiration, nightmare, is as real, maybe more real, than the hard city one can locate in maps and statistics, in monographs on urban sociology and demography and architecture.

I'm a big Raban fan, though I've never read Soft City.

His Bad Land and Passage to Juneau are gorgeous books.

mingz.. I think a soft city is the idea of a city, you know, the way "New York" connotes a certain ambition, facelessness, soul, etc. I think... :)

Jim, are you a Raban fan? I've never read anything by him. Thanks for the recommendation. I wonder which book of his I should check out first. Maybe I'll go to the library, or go get it from the bookstore. I'm buying so many more books recently. Tsk. Thanks for your dropping by..
