I need a cheap getaway for 2-3 days. Preferably a nice hotel/ resort, either a beach or a town to walk in, and somewhere that does not feel like Singapore. Which of these do you recommend?
1. Malacca
2. Desaru
3. Bintan
4. Batam
5. KL
Or perhaps something else altogether?

forget Bintan and Batam, they charge in Sing dollars... so no diff... esp when the government is backing those resorts who are trying to squeeze as much out of visitors as possible... KL is another big city altho still offers some variety in terms of retail therapy...
Desaru is a little dingey... which leaves Malacca... i kinda like the old world charm about the place, it's fairly cheap still... but avoid the long holiday weekends when Malaysians from other states descend on it like flies on a dead camel...
hey thanks. i really liked malacca too, but thought that i should give desaru and batam a chance, since i've never been there before. maybe i'll stick to malacca, unless there is something else..
Pottstown is lovely this time of year, if you can avoid the rising flood waters and the mosquitoes.
She said 2-3 days, Jim. It would take her that long just to get to Possburg. ;-)
Hee. :) I would love to come to Pottstown, even with the mosquitoes, if only the flight wasn't so looong!
if you like resorty-beachy areas, you could try Phuket. The beach is just some minutes walk away from the less expensive hotels. If you can afford a little more though, the resorts are really nice.

Bintan, Phuket, Bali or Siem Reap(have yet to go there myself).
